Male Tears is a collaborative project between Oslo Street Art Festival and the art collective Subvertising Norway. The exhibition is based around a concept of advertisements for a fake perfume brand, Male Tears, designed by the artist Hello The Mushroom, which forms a tongue-in-cheek commentary on rigid gender roles.
In the words of the artist:
“As we all know boys don’t cry, therefore making male tears an extremely precious and valuable commodity. In our society men are expected to behave differently from women as if our biology is completely alien from each other. Therefore, it is important to at least have conversations around this topic - without pointing fingers or creating an us vs them environment. If we have to take one thing away from this event it is that treating men as incapable of human emotion does a disservice to all mankind.”
On 13 August, 40 adverts promoting the Hello The Mushroom's perfume creation were installed in advertising shells around Oslo. These perfumes have been brought to life on the occasion of the exhibition.
The exhibition will feature original artworks, poster editions, a zine documenting the project with images by photographer Nima Taheri, and a special live performance piece during the first hour of the opening (kl. 18:00–19:00).
About:
Sara Lucas aka Hello the Mushroom is an artist from Lisbon, now living in Oslo. Their work can be found on the streets and in galleries around the world. The artist is interested in the idea of transforming existing materials, using objects that would otherwise be thrown away or considered superfluous. The artworks are therefore mainly image-based, by reusing printed media, and are characterized by the artist's personal exploration of topics such as life, death and cultural expectations of women, often in a humorous way.
Hello the Mushroom has exhibited in several galleries worldwide, including the Saatchi Gallery and the Well Hung Gallery in London, UK, and has collaborated on several occasions with the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, UK.
Subvertising Norway (established in 2018) is a collective of artists, activists, designers, educators and citizens dedicated to questioning who has the power and authority to communicate and create meaning in the public space through acts of creative subversion and art-based activism.
Our annual exhibition series Dog Days consists of exhibitions that present artists and projects that in different ways reflect a wide range of graffiti, street and outsider art, with an emphasis on young and newly established artists and an aim to connect the 'street' and the 'gallery' by showcasing the artist's studio-based practice in relation to their work in public space.
